Rare Disease Day
February 29th, is World Rare Disease Day
World Rare Disease Day is a time when the global community comes together in unity, to build voice, awareness and support for the hundreds of millions of patients and their families affected by rare disease.
Rare Disease Facts:
- An estimated 350 million people worldwide are affected by a rare disease
- Only 5% of rare diseases have treatments; there are no cures
- Over 50% of rare diseases have no foundations, advocacy groups or community support
- 1 in 10 Americans are affected by RARE disease, that’s over 30 million people
- 30 million Americans is more than the total number of people living worldwide with cancer (28 million according to the Livestrong Foundation)
Join us as we come together with other Rare Diseases to raise awareness and help the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research raise funds for much needed research. Participating is easy:
- Ask local businesses if you can place a counter card at the cash register and collect funds for research.
- Ask your place of work to allow a “Genes” Day where you and your co-workers can donate $5 to wear jeans to work.
- Promote a “Genes” Day at local schools: kids and teachers can donate $1 to wear jeans to school. Students can also make the blue Rare Disease ribbon to wear and take part in classroom activities about rare diseases.
The Foundation for Prader-Willi Research will provide you with counter cards and posters to support your efforts!
